Orthodontics is a specialty within the larger field of dentistry that focuses on straightening teeth and aligning bites. All orthodontists must earn the same DDS degree as general dentists, but they continue for another two to three years of advanced training to learn specific techniques to straighten teeth and align the jaws.
So why receive orthodontic treatment? One obvious reason is that a straight smile looks attractive which can promote a positive self-image.
Beyond aesthetic and social reasons, a well-aligned smile is also important for health. People with correct bites and straight teeth are less likely to suffer from tooth decay or gum disease and more likely to avoid dental-related pain and infections.
Treatment Options
Patients have more orthodontic treatment options today than ever before. At Behl Orthodontics, we use metal braces as well as ceramic braces and clear braces, which are less noticeable choices. Lingual braces use the same metal brackets as traditional braces, but they are installed behind the teeth to hide them from view. Invisalign® is a system involving a series of transparent trays that fit directly over the teeth to provide nearly invisible treatment.
How to choose among the different options? We discuss the different options in detail with all our patients during the initial consultation so they can decide which one is the best for them.
Treatment Times
How long does treatment take? We can give a broad estimate of anywhere from one and a half to three years. Some factors that cause treatment times to vary include:
- Severity – More severe orthodontic issues take longer to correct.
- Age – Treatments for adult patients can take longer than treatments for children and adolescent patients.
- The treatment method – As mentioned above, some treatment options work more quickly than others.
- Oral hygiene – Patients who neglect caring for their teeth may face dental issues that result in longer treatment times and other problems.
- Compliance – Patients who use their orthodontic appliances (Invisalign trays, rubber bands, etc.) as instructed will enjoy shorter treatment times.
